SEPTIC SOAKAWAYS & DRAINAGE FIELDS

INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE

Septic tanks can be designed to allow liquid to drain away through a soakaway or drainage field. This allows the fluid to soak into a designated drainage field, allowing the water to be treated, remove contaminants from the septic tank wastewater, and not pollute surrounding areas and watercourses.

The installation of a soakaway is governed by Environment Agency and Building Regulations to ensure that surrounding waterways remain unpolluted and protected.

We offer a 2 Year Groundworks Warranty for installations for peace of mind.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A soakaway is typically a buried drainage feature and is a compliant solution to the septic tank regulations and disposing of waste. The water will filter through gravel, soil, and sand as part of this process before reaching the mains water table.

PERCOLATION TESTING

To calculate the size of a drainage field we have to assess porosity.  This is done by carrying out percolation tests in the area the drainage field will be installed. The process takes a few hours, there is minimum disruption and all areas are reinstated.Once the perc test is complete we can calculate the Vp to accurately size, in line with regulations. This also enables us to provide a fixed price quotation for the installation that we aim to have with you the day following the testing.

A = p X Vp X 0.25 (septic tanks)
A = p X Vp X 0.20 (sewage treatment plant)

A= required Drainage Field in m2
P = Number of person
Vp = percolation value

Frequently Asked Questions

  • In the UK off-mains drainage industry, these terms refer to the exact same thing. A drainage field (or soakaway) is a carefully designed network of perforated pipes laid in underground trenches. It is responsible for safely filtering and dispersing the treated wastewater from your septic tank or sewage treatment plant into the surrounding soil.

  • Yes. Under the Environment Agency's General Binding Rules, a standard septic tank must discharge into a correctly designed and sized drainage field. It is illegal for a septic tank to discharge directly into a ditch, stream, river, or surface water. If your current system is non-compliant, we can design and install a legal, modern drainage field for you.

  • The most common signs of a failed drainage field include foul odours, waterlogged or unusually lush ground above the pipe network, or your septic tank backing up and requiring more frequent emptying than usual.
